St. Bonaventure Church has automated doors on the south and east sides of the church.  We have no steps to get into the church.  We have an
elevator to the choir loft. We have a cry room. We have a special one unisex bathroom for people using a wheelchair.
We do have an elevator, handicapped access ramp to outside entrances, automatic doors and large print books/missalettes.  Instead of a crying room we have a foyer area with chairs, sound and open sight lines. Once a year we have mass and breakfast for spirit and light groups.
Our event is called the Mass and Brunch for People with disAbilities.  It is open to anyone.  We have a mixture of adults and children, individuals and families.  There are people who attend with various physical and cognitive challenges.  The event is always held on a Saturday morning.  It begins at 8:30 a.m. with optional individual Reconciliation.  Mass
begins at 9:00 and usually lasts just over 30 minutes.  From there we move into the social hall for a breakfast of eggs, sausage, toast, muffins, fruit, juice, milk, coffee.  After brunch we offer some form of entertainment.

St. Alphonsus Special Ed Program

This program, coordinated by Barb Walhood, provides for the spiritual, social and emotional needs of the adults, teens and children with special needs. We meet every Sunday from October through April. The groups range from one to ten students, each group having one or two volunteer teachers. Participants range in age from seven to sixty-five years. The disabilities are varied: Downs Syndrome, autism, educable mentally handicapped and other syndromes.

Four times a year we have parties with food, crafts, videos and games and allow the participants to relate on a more casual level. The archdiocese sponsors a retreat in the spring of each year for special needs people in the diocese. Usually 3-5 of our students are able to participate. We try to offer support and encouragement to our students and to their parents and the group home staffs who care for them.

East (main) and south entrances into church are
on the main level...no steps.

Handicap parking is available on the south side of the church.  It is also available at the north parking lot.

The south entrance of the church (main level) has an automatic door.

The lower level of the church has handicap accessible restrooms and a ramp because there are steps to the entrance on the north of the church.

When there has been a need
for a young one with developmental delays or disAbilities, we have made
faith formation class and reception of the Sacraments
as available to that person as possible.  We are always
willing to work with the family to ensure their children are welcomed into our faith formation program.  When this has been done in the past, everyone surrounding the student has been enriched beyond belief.
We do not have anything special. We are a very old church. St Nicholas is on the historical society registry. We have easy access to get into our church and our parish center.

The Church of St. Genevieve in Centerville has the following to offer: handicapped access ramp, automatic doors (at our Community Center where the 10:00 am Sunday Mass is offered), wheelchairs, walkers & special hearing aids.
At St. Hubert Catholic Community here in Chanhassen, we welcome those who need some special attention!  We have an elevator to go between our two floors.  We also have a modern zero level entry with automatic doors for those who need assistance.  We have space in our sanctuary dedicated for wheelchair space and have hearing assistance for those who want the service a little louder.

For children seeking faith formation opportunities, we gladly welcome mainstreamed children with physical and learning challenges in our regular faith formation program.  Our summer faith formation programs for those in grades 1 - 8 and high school are particularly popular with kids with ADHD and autism.

We also, in conjunction with St. Therese in Deephaven, offer special education faith formation with those that qualify for this group. (The criteria is the same as the public school system).

We also will work individually with families seeking sacraments for their special needs dependents.

Our buildings are not the most handicapped friendly mainly due to their age and the extreme expense involved with making such an old structure handicapped friendly.  We do offer handicapped access ramps in our church and social hall in the church.  We have a three-level school but have been unable to afford to put an elevator in our church nor in our school.  We just completed a project where we added a push button automatic door for our church that connects to the handicapped ramp.  When we last did renovation in our church about 10 years ago, we created spaces for people in wheelchairs within the worship space.  Also, when we last renovated our social hall, we widened the doorways in both bathrooms, installed countertops/sinks and toilets that are ADA compliant and we added grab bars around the toilets in each bathroom (both bathrooms are single occupancy only).

As we make improvements to our school, we do keep these things in mind, but with the age of the building (circa 1913), it has been a difficult undertaking.

  Epiphany complex is all
on one floor so it is accessible to all. We offer special education classes on Sundays for elementary aged children and each youth minister tries to integrate middle and high school teens into our catechetical and youth
ministry programs. We do have a cry room and special seating in the church for those with mobility issues. Our school works with each family/student to determine if they can and how best to accommodate special needs. We would meet with a family/individual regarding sacramental preparation. We are a parish open to responding to
a variety of needs.
St. Raphael’s in Crystal has: Automatic doors on the lower east side. Low drinking faucets. Crying rooms. Elevator. Special ed. religious classes (individual basis)

Elevator, handicapped access ramp, handicapped access restroom stalls, Mass is fed through the speaker system to the commons (lobby) in essence making a large crying area, religious education classes—working with disabilities as needed.

We have assisted hearing devices from Williams Sound.  We have 3 assistive listening FM transmitters.  One of them is a neck loop.  Two have ear buds.

The primary entrances on the lower and upper level of the building are accessible and have automatic doors. There are elevators between the upper and lower levels and ramps linking the upper level. The meeting rooms are accessible as is the worship space.

We have a sign language interpreter at the 11am mass every Sunday. We have slides on a screen instead of hymnals, but we have made the material available in another form if needed. We have hearing assistance devices available that tie directly into the sound system.

We recently began a Sunday morning faith formation program for those with special needs. Volunteers provide one-on-one support and guidance.

We will work to adapt materials and activities in faith formation and sacramental preparation programs as requested. We have also provided helpers so children can be in a regular faith formation sessions.

We have a “Families with Special Needs” group that meets about 5 times/year for support and social time. Supervised child care with activities is provided so parents can meet alone, often with a speaker/presenter on a topic of interest.

We have a special needs contact on the staff list in our weekly bulletin. Michael Griffin 952-405-7230.

We have 5 automatic door entrances - 3 to church, 1 to social hall, 1 to Parish center offices.  95% of our facility is accessible.

Accessible restrooms.
We have assisted listening devices for hearing impaired for the sound system in church.
We have a cry room.
We will provide for a ASL interpreter for faith formation classes for parishioners if required.

At Divine Mercy in Faribault we currently have two churches, one (Sacred Heart building) has an elevator, and the other (Immaculate Conception building) has a ramp to get into the church but not to the basement where the bathrooms are.

Our 9am Mass on Sunday morning is interpreted for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (in Advent and Lent we offer Communal Penance in sign also)

We recently broke ground for our new church and hope to be in it summer of 2009 and will be handicapped accessible.

Once a month there is Fiesta Night (held in the Early Childhood building) for families with children with disabilities.  Parents can drop off not only the child with the disabilities but their other children as well – runs from 4-8pm. This gives the parents time to go to Mass together and a few hours respite. For more information on this contact: bdmcdonell@yahoo.com

We have elevators, handicapped access ramp, automatic doors, and an area outside of the Mass for crying children, large print hymnals.
We have available personal amplification systems for those with hearing needs.

Our space does not have a cry room, nor does one fit the theology of our worship at St. MM.  All are welcome here! Most people are very respectful and worshippers know they can move to the Gathering Space if they need to.

Our Gather Hymnals are regular size print, but worship aids are large print.

We have not had a need for a sign language interpreter yet.

Our Faith Formation classes and Children's Liturgy of Word programs are open to all who can benefit from them.  Our teachers are volunteers, mostly parents.

Many disabled persons of all ages and descriptions have worshiped at St. John's.
It has depended on the efforts of the person, and/or  their helpers, to figure out the most convenient way to approach the building and their needs.

St. John's recently put in ramps to get to the toilets. There are handicapped doors on the toilets and adequate facilities in the toilets. There are handicapped doors on the parking lot side, and a ramp for those with disabilities that leads from handicapped parking spots. The pews in the front and center (down a slight incline) are cut away for wheel chairs and walkers.

Those who wish to receive communion are close to the Eucharistic Ministers.  They can receive in the pew if they ask the ushers in advance of the service, so the Eucharistic Ministers can be informed. We have always had a door off Interlachen Road that is level with the sidewalk and leads to the pews in the church proper.
That door is handicapped accessible.  The confessional is a few feet from that door. So is the Baptismal font.

Religious Education
Our Faith Formation Director has tutored people with disabilities before and is very willing to help parishioners. She is however employed part time and has a facility (our school) that is not yet handicapped accessible. The Church was not designed for group activities, only community gatherings.  We are still short office space, and meeting space. So we use the school. This does not help those with physical disabilities. So facilities other than St. John's should be
considered for the near future.
If we are honest about "inclusive education", we will have to pursue Classes that last longer and occur more often.  It is a struggle to give enough good information about our Faith to those who come once a week for one hour for  8 months out of the year.
The teachers are currently volunteers, with out special training. Space in classrooms is limited. That said, we have to start somewhere!

The Special Needs Program at St Stephen’s is going strong!  We do not have much going on over the summer because of the lack of air conditioning in our community center.

Our regular programs run from September to May, we have a Spiritual Enrichment Program on Saturdays were we focus on helping the participants to make connections to their faith and find ways to connect with the larger community of faith where ever they worship.  This is a non-denominational program, we accept people of all faiths even non-Christians.  Our Social Activities Program is just that, social activities.  We have activities every Wednesday evening from September to May.  One week each month we have art, movie, dance or cookie baking and if there are 5 Wednesdays in a month we add a games night.  We also tried to start a basketball group one Tuesday evening each month and we will try to do that again next year.

We do have a website here at St Stephen’s and there are pages for the Special Needs Programs, our web address is www.ststephenscommunity.org

St. Peter’s welcomes all and is continually working, as quickly as our finances will allow, to make our liturgies increasingly handicap accessible, to eventually include our sanctuary area.  Currently, we offer an elevator at our north entrance, no-steps access from our north and west entrances, handicap parking spaces at all entrances, seven wheelchairs, reserved special-needs pews, a cry room, hearing aids, annual healing Masses, and family faith formation whereby studies are done from home as a family.

Our preschool and elementary are all on one level which is a tremendous help for children with disabilities.

I cannot answer for the school...
In Faith Formation, our Sunday preschool is headed by a woman who is full-time special ed teacher in the Mpls schools.  In grades 1-5 parents and children come together as family. Inclusion is what we do most of.  We offer one-one if parents are open to it and if there is a need. We are small enough that we can talk with parents about individual needs
and think we're doing a pretty good job with those who come.

The church doors are handicapped accessible. The school entry doors are secured so automatic doors are not an option.  We do not have bathrooms that work well for adult handicapped needs.  We do have a couple individual bathrooms in the school wing that are ok.

Our church is handicap accessible (handicapped access ramp & all one level, so no need for an elevator). We do not have automatic doors.

We also have a crying room.

We are a very small parish and our Faith Formation classes are very small - 5 to 10 students per class. We are definitely willing to do what we can to best serve all of the families in our parish. We presently have one autistic student in our program, as well as other students with learning disabilities. Our catechists are volunteers with no professional training, but we are willing to work with the parents to best serve their child.

At the Cathedral of Saint Paul, we have ground-level access to the nave of the church and automatic doors at the west entrance on Selby Avenue.
We have ground-level access to the lower level at the east entrance on Dayton Avenue.

We have an elevator in the northeast corner of the Cathedral.

We have assisted listening devices for the hard of hearing that can be checked out from the Usher’s Room between the vestibule and the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

During Mass, our Usher’s Room is available for parents to take their children. It has a screen and a chair for nursing mothers and a diaper changing table; however, there is no sound from the Mass and no way to see the sanctuary or nave from this room.

At Holy Spirit in Saint Paul, our Church is handicapped accessible with an elevator and handicapped parking.  The offices and school are also accessible with ground floor entrance and an elevator.  Immaculate Heart of Mary and St Luke's in St Paul merged on January 1, 2008 to become the church of St Thomas More.   At Nativity, we have an elevator available which takes people up to the church’s main sanctuary and to the lower level of Steiner Hall where the 9:30 Mass is on Sundays.  Handicap parking on the Prior Avenue side is available but I suggest arriving early as these spaces fill quickly.  Although we have a loading and unloading area, winter is often challenging with the snow, plowing and freezing on the curb.

First, I should tell you that our main church, gathering area, offices and Education Center were just completed in 2005 and meet all required codes. The new worship space is connected to our historic church built in the 1870s. There are no steps to enter our new church and we do have automatic doors that can be activated when needed. The first three rows of pews are actually individual chairs and kneelers and they can be moved to accommodate wheel chairs if necessary. Everyone can easily come forward to receive the Eucharist or, when necessary, our priest or a Eucharistic Minister will go to a person.

The historic church, of course, is not quite as convenient. There is a step to enter the front door, however, you can also enter the historic church through the new church. The pews are stationery and the aisles are narrow.

The gathering space, the parish kitchen and dining hall all are on the same level as the new church. All bathrooms meet all applicable codes and requirements. All the doorways are side enough to handle wheel chairs.

Our Education Center and parish offices are on the lower level. There is an elevator to the lower level (where the offices are located) and a ramp that continues down into the Education Center .
